I agree about the weirdness of Escapade getting an entry in the same book they first appeared in.  I guess this means there are plans to use them in the future, but shouldn't they accumulate appearances, history, and development first before getting an entry?  I'm going to assume their entry was a mandate by editorial.

As for Viv Vision and the page count of their entry, I think the only way she could have gotten a 2-page entry instead of 4 pages is if her entry was done in the previous, X-Men 2004-Secret Wars handbook style with the much smaller type.  That is, if you want to do justice to her history and extensive character development.  Kyle and Jumbo may have each been introduced years before her, but she's made more appearances and had more development than any of the other characters who got entries in this issue.  Plus, all the artwork needed to show all the different costumes and/or appearances she's had.  At least she's not in Janet van Dyne territory!

I'd also like to comment on how the entries themselves were organized this time around.  I think this may be as close as we might get to a good synthesis of the two different styles for handbook entries.  Moving the biographical information and the main character image back to the top or front of the entry is an immense improvement, IMO, over literally putting them at the bottom or back of the entries, even if the main image is still smaller than it used to be.

I agree the different style mash-up for the layout of the entries is nicer than the last handbook. Much more familiar yet also modernised once again, though I still want the text and line spacing to be smaller. I am fine with the other changes, I just want to get more information onto the page. I sincerely hope we see more of these soon, everyone!

Imagine if the planned sixth season story of Spider-Man: TAS had come to fruition with Carnage as the Ripper. Great read, by the way!

I'm curious what led to these new profiles being commissioned, if anyone is free to say?

It's set to come out Wed June 22.

What's odd is not only did I order it just the other day, but it arrived in the mail today earlier than it's release date! Lovely to see the handbook profiles in the back, even if I don't love the over use of images in the entries themselves. Great work, team! I look forward to more of these in future publications, I'll follow the handbook team where ever that may lead.

Mantis's entry states that it is continued from her profile in the Annihilation Conquest Omnibus. However as far as I can tell her omnibus entry is just a reprint of her entry from the Star-Lord: Annihilation—Conquest one-shot. Am I missing something, or was it an error?

I'm just guessing but I think the intention is to note the most recent publication of the previously most up to date profile entry.

I love that it's the classic style with the small type.

I appreciate that smaller text too. Kinda wish we had some new handbooks for real!

Great work as always, everyone! I sincerely hope we get news about a new Handbook very soon!

Reply from the team:
The Carnage profile states that Carnage took his second symbiote in the Negative Zone.

I was referring to the suggestion that remnants of the original symbiote merged or assimilated the Negative Zone symbiote which helps explain why later stories ignore this change. So since it's being pushed back, will the entries cover what happened during the crossover?

I think it's more likely it will cover things prior to the event. I don't think they'll want to pay the poor writers more money to come back and make additions.

Only just spotted these newer queries, so sorry for slow response.

Sidney, yes, the entries are getting updated to cover at least partway through the crossover. This is especially good for one entry covering a character who KiB has just massively retconned/expanded their backstory (depending on your POV).

frogoat: You are right that Marvel won't want to pay us writers any additional money to do updates. Luckily for them, they don't need to - we get paid only based on finished pages, so no extra cash for doing updates. This isn't a gripe - we knew that going in, and besides, it's a point of pride on our part to try and do the best entries we can.

I'm very glad to be wrong! Shame you guys don't get paid for your extra time and effort, but it is certainly appreciated!

I will be interested to see if we'll get profiles of any alternate universe symbiotes or hosts, such as May Parker of Earth-9997/Earth X..

While I'd really love to see May Parker aka Venom get a profile, I doubt it'll be in this handbook.

I hope the feedback from this latest batch makes it's way back to Editorial. Constructive feedback is always good to work with.

I'm keen for this too, and three in one year (especially this year!) is a good sign. I hope these continue for a good long while. Nice to see Ron Lim on covers, seems like he's secured the regular cover art duties with this batch! I'd love a Hardcover collection again too but I'd settle for reprints of the two different formats with perhaps the information updated as we had last time. It's weird to think this would have likely come out in time for the Venom sequel movie.

I've not finished reading it, but I've read through some of the entries and I wanted to say a few things. I appreciate the note at the start of entries that tells you that it carries on from their previous handbook entry and where and when that was. I think this is a good method for saving some much needed space and keeping track of some of the more obscure entries. For example, I had no idea Captain Marvel received a profile in a TPB.

I take it these new handbooks are intended as continuations and updates of the previous entries where ever applicable?

Unfortunately I didn't get any new information about Skrull life cycles, but I'm not too concerned.

Looking forward to the X of Swords Handbook and whatever else the team puts out in the coming months!

Thanks to everyone involved!

I just did a check and I'm seeing both July 29 and August 5. Since Previews says August 5, that unfortunately seems the most likely of the two dates unfortunately. The glass half full is, at least two Handbooks this year, eventually!

Thanks for clarifying, I found it a little unclear. I'm just happy we get more Handbooks, too. If this leads to a resurgence of them in years to come, I'll be a happy person!

Even with the delay, I'm excited for this new Handbook. It's been far too long. I've missed the more regular releases of Handbooks, themed or otherwise. I'm ordering two copies. I hope this sells well and we get more down the line.
