Despite his immense power, the Hulk was often depicted as a tragic figure, tormented by the duality of his nature and his inability to control his transformations. Banner's ultimate goal was to find a way to separate himself from the Hulk permanently, but his efforts were often thwarted by his enemies and his own inner turmoil.
