Never Been Kissed in the 2000s

I created this thread Jan 5, 2011, 02:59 pm. As I hope to update this from time to time as new Handbook entries trickle in, the rest of the historical text will start in the second post.

This is now being updated at the top of the thread. The old original post is now at the top of the second post in this thread. If there is a plus sign beside an entry name, they’ve been announced for an upcoming Hand

Updated to Empyre Handbook

The following is a list of entries in the 1980s-1990s Handbooks that have not had entries in the 2000s run, though some had entries in the official (i.e. non-DK, etc) Encyclopedias (E) or in the Files (F) books. A=Appendix.

I’m keeping the Roman numerals for historical purposes but adding qualifiers in brackets. I usually won’t bother though if a qualifier is more due to a character introduced later than the Handbook in question.

Marvel Superhero Contest of Champions

This refers to the text section at the back of the issues; while not a Handbook per se, these sections were the prototype for the eventually Handbooks and thus are important from an historical standpoint.

Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (vol. 2) Deluxe Edition

For this series equipment that’s folded into broader entries is ignored as that’s a conceit of the modern volumes as well. However, equipment with its own distinct entry will be treated separately.

¼ page sub-entries: If the main entry isn’t covered, the format will be [main entry]; also [sub-entries]. If the main entry is covered, the format will be [main entry]: [sub-entries]. If the sub-entries are covered but not the main entry, only the main entry will be listed. I’m only counting ¼ pagers that list more than first appearances. For ¼ pagers, Roman numerals only clarified if not obvious from their group affiliation. I doubt anyone thinks that Ned Leeds was a member of Shi’ar’s Imperial Guard.

Re: Never Been Kissed in the 2000s

Additional historical text from Comixfan:

Note: I've merged the material from the first two posts here so I can use the first post to maintain the list while still keeping the historical original post for comparison sake:

Hope this thread doesn’t get merged with others because I’ll be covering a lot of ground here and hopefully shortening these lists every so often. Thought it might be fun to make a list of those characters from various Handbooks who have not yet been touched in the 2000s or if so, in Files (F) or Encyclopedias (E) only. I’m generally sticking to how they were listed in the old books, with clarifications as needed, hence the use of Roman numerals. In the interest of ensuring no one gets overlooked, I reference characters whenever they appear in the old handbooks, so some characters will invariably be listed multiple times (due to different names and different handbook series)

v1 corrections: Scratch Warstar in #12 but add Karkas to #6. Also note that Whizzer III is generally now considered to be Whizzer II

I've always considered them exactly as you said: The Knights are the enforcement arm of the New Men. When putting them into my custom database application, I entered them as separate records.

Thank you everyone for the corrections thus far. Because of the "only for one hour" editing rule I'll wait until maybe a week after I've posted the Masters#36 entries for any additional corrections to trickle in, and then I'll respost the cleaned up versions.

Nice work Andy!

Ani-Mator, Bird-Brain, Chance (Powell), the Commission, Laura Dean, Doctor Spectrum, Frank Drake, Earth Lord, Garokk the Petrified Man, Gateway, Infectia, Gabe Jones, Left-Winger, Lobo Brothers (includes Carlos Lobo), Moon Boy, Persuasion, Dr. James Power, the Right, Shadowmasters. Shalla-Ball, Sisters of Sin, Whiteout all had little entries in the Marvel Encyclopedia (v2, 2006). Unfortunately Laura's entry included a picture of the wrong girl (Puck/Zuzha Yu). Doctor Spectrum had only pictures of his Supreme Power counterpart.
Perhaps more of those you listed were in it, but I only checked the Update '89 entries.

Serpent Society was covered in OHOTMU: Teams 2005 and OHOTMU A-Z HC #10. Night Shift was recently covered in the OHOTMU A-Z Update #2.

That 2006 encyclopedia was riddled with errors, wrong images, etc. Unfortunately, the updated version in 2009 didn't seem to correct them all.

That's one of the reasons I'm not counting the DK encyclopedias and only counting the early 2000s series put out by Marvel. Actually I haven't seen read DK's Marvel ones but their first DC one had the same problem. Another reason therefore is I don't have then and can't scrutinize them. A third reason is that ones put out at Marvel themselves (other than the Hulk one where one of the writers actually bragged that his writing wasn't as good as the Wizard magazine writers; I remain amazed by that) have a stronger connection to the modern Handbooks than do the DK versions.

Actually the Update '89 references to Night Shift and Serpent Society were only to the 1/4-page sub-entries (e.g. Digger and Puff Adder). While it's true that the broad entries have been covered, the specific individual members listed who had 1/4 pagers have not been given a new entry.

Oh, I have to amend one thing I said earlier: after Masters I will be doing one more. Hint: it was put out by Marvel in the 1990s after the Masters ended.

Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (Vol. 3 II) Master’s Edition

As noted above, both this series and Update ’89 were treated as vol. 3 in the indica. I’m doing all these in one post due the “jigsaw” nature of the series; that is, because I’ve put the entries in ABC order, I’m checking the issue numbers whenever I come across someone not yet covered. I’ve kept the Contents pages but they aren’t always clear which version of a character’s covered.

For Supporting Cast listings I’ve also included the sub-listings. Note that some of Spider-Man’s supporting cast have had sub-entries in the newer Supporting Cast listing, but if listed here haven’t had their own entry

GG III is Dr. Bart Hamilton (he became the Goblin due to treating Harry, who of course only became the Goblin after witnessing his father's apparent death). He typically shared the GG entries with the Osborns in the old Handbooks so I ignored the Osborns and only listed him.

I never realized how much of a pain it was until new characters of the same name started getting shoehorned into past continuity, then it became apparent that the roman numeral system was deeply flawed.

I much prefer the system you guys came up with. You really have made the OHOTMU series your own - bigger, better, and all-encompassing.

There is. We simply have to pick another distinguishing characteristic (e.g. "Black Knight (Vatican's)"). Occasionally it's not the most elegant option, but that's why real names are preferable for clarifiers.

It's not just the retcon characters, it's characters that legitimately had that name without being recognized by the roman numerals as well, such as all the western characters like Vulture, Tarantula, etc.

True. In the 1980s I don't think they realized how many Vultures there were. Of course there's been a shift since the 1980s. In the 1980s, Golden Age stories were generally *not* in continuity unless specifically noted, whereas now Golden Age stories are generally considered to be in continuity unless noted. That alone affected the Roman numeral placement.

Yet another complication of course is What If? Worlds, especially since on rare occasions characters introduced in that title appear elsewhere. Thankfully so far that hasn't gotten as out of control as it could potentially get.

Where I do the next draft of this list, I'll keep in the Roman numerals for historical purposes, but I'll include a clarifier in brackets afterwards.

something I may suggest if you plan another version - It might read easier if you put all the characters in one alphabetical list, with notations of what they appearead in (e.g. (Or4, DE3, ME25)) after the names

Hmm, I could certainly see myself doing things both ways. I can see how that would be helpful, but at the same time wouldn't want the list to just be the same as Eric's only with characters omitted as they get covered in newer books (plus the odd tweak here and there). The other reason I'd still want to keep the issue by issue format as well is I think it's fun to see how close the older books are to being covered in their entirety post-2000 (in particular there are some Masters issues that are only 1-3 entries away from being migrated over completely). But if there's enough interest I'd be happy to do both formats.

I have to admit I like your chosen method of listing for that very reason - it's easy to spot what needs to be done to eliminate each individual older issue from the listing, allowing for an element of "targetting."

Good point. I'll make a special note of him. It's probably still not worth doing all the trades just for him but it's still worth noting.

Glad you like it. The reason I embarked on this was my curiousity about this got the best of me, and figured that the people who frequent this board might be similarly curious. If this does affect who gets covered in later volumes I'll certainly be flattered, but it was mainly that I had an itch to scratch. I was sad when I was going through the Masters Edition sheets and hit the X's. #10 came so close...

I like the idea of this list. I did a similar thing. I made a list of all the characters from the three 1980's series who haven't been covered yet, and cross off those who get entries. Personally, I'd like to see all the entries from the '80's being covered.

Yeah, that's where I have mine. The first list was three sheets, front and back, with two columns. After the last hardcover came out, I redid it and ended up with less than two sheets. Of course, I only covered full entries and not the quarter page ones.

I thought it was important to include those and the Appendix because those are often where the oddball characters are.

One of the first things that comes to mind looking over this is how easy it would be to fill a Thor handbook. There's tons of Thor characters that haven't received modern entries.

I also want to point out that the Deluxe edition trades had a different entry for the android Zodiac, which did 1/4 pagers for the membership (not the same 1/4 pagers for the deceased Zodiac in issue 20). For some reason, they numbered them by their status in the android Zodiac organization, so that both the Human Zodiac and the android Zodiac had, for instance, an Aries I and Aries II.

At any rate, the 1/4 page entries for the android Zodiac were: Aquarius, Aries I & II, Cancer, Capricorn II, Gemini, Leo I & II, Libra, Pisces II, Sagittarius I & II, Taurus I & II, Virgo II. (I presume the number of II's with no I's is because the first android Zodiac had several members who didn't "survive" the creation process)

Not a problem. And that's it, too. Zodiac 1/4-pagers and Power Broker are all the "new" tpb entries that haven't been covered in recent years. So, y'know, you could just fit those in with the appropriate Deluxe issue.

I'm a bit behind on my Secret Warrior reading but while I understand de Fontaine is Madame Hydra now, I'd be surprised if she was retconned into being the specific Madame Hydra from Nick Fury vs SHIELD. For one thing both Fontaine and Madame Hydra appeared in many of the same issues (of Nick Fury vs SHIELD and the later Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD series), so there would likely be instances of her being in two places at once. Then there's the fact that this was a lesser Madame Hydra (Madame Hydra Six, so there were at least five Madame Hydra's above her; it would make sense that Fontaine was actually one of the unseen higher ones). Then there's the fact that this Madame Hydra was more than a little crazy and eventually blew herself up on purpose; it could be an elaborate impersonation but what would be the point of pretending to be this particular incarnation of Madame Hydra?

Excellent news (both that four Handbooks are coming soon and that a lot of classic entries will get an update). Hmm, trying to think of themes that could knock off quite a few. Well, there's always a general book; also Thor, aliens/space, villains, Avengers, and, surprisingly, yet another x-book would clear this quite a bit. To a lesser degree also Captain America, Daredevil, Spider-Man.

I'm wagering they Madison does mean Handbooks because because my list includes characters who've appeared in Files books. So for them to be knocked off this list it would have to be in an actual Handbook.

Oh, and one caveat, because of the possibility of situations like Red Ronin in Update 5, I won't actually knock anyone off my list during the solicits, but once an issue is actually in my apartment I'll start trimming the list accordingly. Next time I update the list though (probably once an issue that removes characters is published) I'll note announced characters for other soliticited books.

Andy, you could possibly remove the Soviet Super-Soldiers from Deluxe #12 and the Supreme Soviets from Update #7 as the Winter Guard entry did a good job of covering the groups predecessors (also including Siberforce) so it can be argued that they have already been covered.

Well, I've left in other borderline cases (e.g. Kosmosians, Asgard) so I'll hold off until they get a specific entry on their own. This is not a slight against the Winter Guard entry but rather the fact that it's fun to see defunct teams covered as themselves. Also there might be a different take if they're not presented in relation to a similar, subsequent team. And if they never get covered separately, well, thanks to Rom this list will probably never dwindle entirely to nothing anyway so that doesn't matter too much.

I don't understand why Parker Brothers is still holding onto Rom so tightly. It's not as though they've done anything with the character in forever, and I'd really dig some new Rom stories. Marvel got the rights to reprint his OHOTMU entries in the Essentials a few years back, so maybe there's a small shred of hope...

Didn't Rom show up to Rick Jones's wedding? Or was it his bachelor party? One of the two. I remember he showed up sans armor, but was still mentioned as Rom.

Anyone know the deal behind that one? One would think that incident occured after the license expired as it happened around 93-94, long after Marvel produced the last Rom comic.

On a side note, if you look real closely you can see Rom in South Park's "Imaginationland" trilogy. Of all the characters to choose from, they add Rom. I got a kick out of that.

Rom appeared w/out armor alongside Brandy Clark at Rick's wedding. Don't how Marvel pulled it off. I guess since he wasn't in armor it was easier. Kinda like how Death from the Endless did a cameo at the end of the issue but was seen from behind and never named

My understanding on the issue: Unlike G.I. Joe, Transformers, or Star Wars (whose owners claimed ownership of any characters created for those comics), Rom was licensed similarly to Godzilla or Micronauts, where anyone not from the original source belonged to Marvel. As the only character in the Rom toyline was, in fact, Rom, Marvel owns everybody else including unarmored Rom, as the toy didn't have an unarmored form.

So, technically, if they redesigned him and called him Silver Square-Head Man or somesuch, they could still use him. But what's the point of using Rom if he isn't Rom, ultimately?

:shhh: You could just say "HB" or "FB" or if a combo, "3HB and 1FB"--that's not really telling us what you're working on!

They're definitely handbooks not files, but that's all I can say. Until things are officially announced we can't give any sort of hints or clues really, but I think it was safe and fair to say we're working on something at least.

Also, Rom appeared in an issue of Universe X years ago, also unarmored.

I'm wondering if that was just a case of no one noticing that there shouldn't be an armoured Rom present; his Power Man and Iron First appearance was skipped in that Essential volume. If the armour's the only concern I wouldn't mind seeing a Handbook entry with stuff related to the armour omitted.

Thanks Madison. That's all I wanted to know. Yah, HBS are coming! 4 of them in 2011!! :yeah:

If I had to guess, and I know you can't comment on this Madison, I would say the 4 HBs are:

1) Thor and Associates: Don't forget to add:
*Jane Foster including her goddess days and please mention her alternate future time as Thor known as Thordis
*Casiolena
*The Enchanters
*Fragon the Sorcerer
*Ollerus

2) either Captain America or the Avengers (containing Cap and some associates)

3) The X-Men (and various mutants and associates)

4) either The Fantastic Four or a Miscellaneous Book

Madison may feel he can't comment, but I'm going to throw caution to the wind, and tell you at least one! Our next book is the Star Comics Handbook. Who knew? Don't tell anyone, but Marvel's next big film project is Star Comics, and they've signed Tom Cruise as Planet Terry and Robert DeNiro to play Top Dog. Hence a tie-in handbook. :howudoin:

I'm really hoping for "One-Shot Guys Who Did Something Funny in Less Than Three Panels" Handbook. Featuring the two garbagemen who freaked out when Beast and Iron Man threw some garbage away outside Avengers Mansion, the guy who was going be be known forever more as "The biggest liar in [insert whatever town I've forgotten here]" after the Hulk jumped over his car, and the Tenants Association that tried to get the Fantastic Four evicted and were scared off by the Thing.

I also hope there'll be a two page Appendix on why the heck people are still freaked out by rather mundane super-heroics despite the amount of alien invasions, giant rifts to Hell, and regular apocalypses that occur in the Marvel Universe.

Wow! Thanks for the Sneakity-Peekity, Stuart!

Whoda thunkit, Star Comics!

So, one of my guesses was wrong, hopefully that one being #4, the FF or Miscellaneous book, although a variety of Star Comics cast could definitely be defined as "Miscellaneous".

And don't forget the two workmen who first carried Jocasta into Avengers Mansion, way back when. I think their names were like Mac and Meyer or something. Very funny panels--one says Jocasta is "beautiful, like a new car, or maybe a refrigerator."

Playful, rather than sarcastic. But definitely not serious. I'd have hoped the movie casting info would have alerted anyone reading it that I was being tongue-in-cheek...

You heard right! It would discuss the infamous "Crisis of Infinite Heathcliffs" that merged the Star, comic strip and cartoon versions into Dark Heathcliff, who then battled the hastily assembled team of Garfield, Hobbes and Tigger for multiversal domination.

Oh I knew that. I was being playful as well. :kitty: That's why I said all of those Star Comics characters would fit in the "miscellaneous" character book! :giggle:

I still stick to my 4 predictions of what HBs are forthcoming. I believe those guesses are pretty much on target. https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/cool.png

Looks like the most expected of the handbooks predicted in this thread (but desired nonetheless) is now official. Glad that I'll even be able to strike off the Nine Worlds entry. It won't knock any book off the list entirely but it will move things closer to that goal.

Thank you for the clarifications, Stuart and Captain Swift. I know that there was some speculation of human Rom being available but I guess that was wishful thinking (I'm betting that at the time he appeared in Hulk in human form, his own comic may have been over, but the license hadn't expired).

I hadn't realized there were quite as many characters who had never gotten an official entry, however small, anywhere else. And unless Marvel regains certain licenses, this may well be it for certain characters.

Okay, we know 3 of the 4 now: Thor, X-Men, Captain America. It will be interesting to see what the 4th one is. The above three are movie tie-ins; I think we can rule out a Green Lantern handbook. Avengers is still a possibility but if so it would probably mean three years in a row because more than likely there will be one next year. I hope it's an "out of left field" one, though I realize that they don't sell quite as well. They are just more fun to read.

Now updated to remove entries from the FF book

Andy E. Nystrom

Oct 26, 2011, 02:25 pm

Updated to factor in the Vampires book. Of the two remaining sub-entries in the Deluxe Edition, I decided the Appendix paragraph didn't really count as a full entry, and Blade Doppleganger didn't even merit an Appendix entry; if someone resembling Blade in his 1970s garb visits Handbook writers I'd hide real fast with plenty of crosses and holy water.

Andy E. Nystrom

Dec 7, 2011, 06:05 pm

Updated due to the new Spider-Man trade, thus striking off Green Goblin/Hamilton, Prowler/Cat, and Sin-Eater

Andy E. Nystrom

Dec 21, 2011, 06:36 pm

Updated to the Defenders book. Definitely a lot leaner now, unsurprising since someone whose weight is incalculable (Cloud) has been stricken from the list.

Andy E. Nystrom

May 13, 2012, 11:02 am

Updated to Avengers Roll Call. Alas, no title made a clean sweep. If the Handbooks do resume after a breather and there's a Hulk book, Master Edition #10 stands an excellent chance since only X-Ray is left, and a Fantastic Four book could conceivably take out #28 (Aron, Possessor - Possessor having met two of the team)
