Note: This is another case where the Capes (Optional) version of the list did not survive the crash. I tried to keep an eye out for updates as I reformatted the list but I likely missed stuff.
I created this thread on Comixfan on Oct 25, 2011, 12:05 pm. As I expect to update the first post regularly, the rest of the historical text will start with the second post.
This page is intended to track the living statuses of every character who ever appeared in Book of the Dead issues of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. That is: first series#13-14, Deluxe Edition #16-20, Book of the Dead 2004. I’ll alsoadd in the sole Deceased entry from Update ’89 to make this list complete. Versions of this list appear on both thisforum Who Watches the Watchers and my Sane Insanities blog. I will update this page as needed. There’s also an older version on the VTN site but it’s strictly an Archive version now and won't be updated.
For characters who’ve appeared more than once I’ve cross-referenced later uses to the old one. That way as this list changes I only need to adjust each character once. Apparently some of the below have had clones as part of the Corpse Corps. I'm not sure who all, but since they're clones and not originals it arguably doesn't matter that much.
v1 #13:
Air-Walker: The original is still dead, but the automation returned at some point
Ancient One: still dead, but being "one with the universe" can probably interact with Marvel characters whenever he pleases
Banshee (Inactive): Regained powers and code name but has since died; revived during Necrosha storyline; died and brought back during Chaos War; reportedly returned to death, only to be brought back as a Horseman of Death
Baron Blood I: Back
Baron Strucker: Returned from the dead in Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD v3
Baron Zemo I: still dead; unlikely to reappear with his son being a major player; subsequently revealed to be a later Baron, not the first
Black Knight I: still dead, but his ghost occasionally shows up to help or hinder people
Bloodstone: still dead, though his skeleton played a major role in a Captain America story a few years back; role largely taken up by daughter Elsa
Bucky: returned as the Winter Soldier and subsequently Captain America. Killed off again but returned once more; now back as Winter Soldier.
Captain Mar-Vell: still dead; alleged appearances via time travel proved to be a hoax; briefly revived during Chaos War but killed again (and judging from the fates of Yellowjacket and Swordsman would have returned to the grave anyway); brought back a second during due to Kree experiements with the Phoenix Force but sacrificed himself, rendering him dead again
Changeling: briefly revived as a zombie member of Black Talon's X-Humed before being revived again via resurrection protocols on Krakoa
Count Nefaria: back; has replaced Nefarius, who used hispowers and costume
Darkoth: currently around in Otherplace
Death-Stalker: still dead
Destroyer: reactivated
Dracula: back; has has been destroyed and resurrected multiple times since
Drax the Destroyer:back, though his intelligence was drastically lower for a time
Egghead: brought back in an Ant-Man series
Foolkiller I: still dead; legacy currently on 3rd generation
Gamora: revived with Warlock and Pip
Ghost Rider (Inactive): Active again despite successor Dan Ketch
Giant-Man (Inactive): Regained powers and code name; subsequently killed as Goliath; nephew now new Goliath
Green Goblin: Norman Osborn returned; Harry Osborn was just inactive but became active again, got killed, and then got brought back again inactive; Bart Hamilton is still dead; Phil Urich became a heroic Green Goblin for a while
It: Recreated
Jackal: Brought back; apparently killed again but given the number of clones around at the time could easily return; a clone on Spider Island may prove to be the genuine article
Jocasta: Back
Korvac: Brought back and killed again; a return is said to be likely
Lilith: Back; as her existence is tied to Dracula, is always resurrected whenever Dracula is revived
Mantis (Inactive): this one has become active again
Man-Wolf (Inactive): Has made reappearances as Man-Wolf but not currently active as such
Defunct Teams (still #13):
Ani-Men: Members dead at the time still dead; Bird-Man II later killed by Scourge but revived as part of Hood's army (his death occurred between this Handbook entry and the one in the Deluxe Edition) a third team has since appeared. Dragonfly remains active
Champions of Los Angeles: still defunct, though members have worked together since
Freedom's Five: All apparently dead. If not, this is a World War I team so I doubt Crimson Cavalier, Sir Steel, or Silver Squire are in any shape to do much
Howling Commandos: most being SHIELD agents, continued to work together informally; had an apparent last mission as such in the Secret Warriors series; many dead due to that adventure and others
Invaders: The team has been revived a number of teams; currently active
Kid Commandos: still defunct
Leatherneck Raiders: being a WW2 military team, still defunct
Liberty Legion: Still defunct; inspired the Liberteens
The final page gives info on Death, who briefly died after this entry appeared
v1 #14:
Marvel Boy: Crusader proved to be a still dead imposter; Marvel Boy alive again
Mimic: among the things he mimicked from mutants was their ability to never stay dead
Miss America: still dead
Morbius (Inactive): Active again
Nebulon: Back
Nighthawk: Back
Nova I (Inactive): Was active again for a considerable period of time before dying
Omega: Still destroyed; the newer mini-series is a non-616 version
Patriot: Still dead.
Phantom Eagle: In spite of the fact that his final appearance was as a ghost, still gone
Phoenix: Revealed to be two characters (Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force) who are both back; Grey was stuck in a death-like White Room for a long time
Pip the Troll: revived with Warlock and Gamora
Red Guardian I: revealed to not be the first; back
Red Guardian II (Inactive): revealed to be a later Red Guardian; currently literally in Limbo as Starlight
Red Raven: Back; death revealed to be a (still gone) robot
Satana: Back; with the Thunderbolts
Shang-Chi (Inactive): Back; has been a member of the Avengers
Son of Satan (Inactive): Active again as Hellstorm
Spider-Woman I (Inactive): Active again; with the Avengers
Spirit of '76: Still dead
Spitfire (Inactive): Active; regained youth before becoming a vampire
Swordsman: Resurrected during Chaos War; reportedly returned to death (in Tom Brevoort's Forumspring and in v1 of the current Handbook tpb). However, this was never actually depicted on panel in a comic, so a change in editorial policy could conceivably establish that he’s still alive; an alternate Swordsman has been active for years and Andreas Strucker had a unique take on the Swordsman identity
Terrax: Returned in the first issue of New Warriors
Thanos: Listed as inactive, though some sources like Marvel Graphic Novel showed him more as dead; back among the living regardless
3-D Man (Inactive): Still inactive; mantle passed to former Triathlon
Thunderbird: revived during Necrosha storyline; died and brought back during Chaos War; returned to death, but revived again via resurrection protocols on Krakoa; his brother took his name before becoming Warpath
Thunderbolt: still dead
Toro: Brought back due to Captain America (Barnes) messing with the timestream in AvengersInvaders
Torpedo: still dead; Turbo now using his suit
Adam Warlock: Brought back along with Gamora and Pip
White Tiger (Inactive): Since been killed
Whizzer: still dead
Vampires: All vampires apparently revived; however, since not all have since been seen, it's conceivable that the bad guys exaggerated the number to shaken Blade
Yellowjacket (Inactive): Since been active again, in order: Dr. Pym, Giant-Man, Yellowjacket, Giant-Man, Wasp, Giant-Man; had a female successor as Yellowjacket for a time; not currently using a code name in his role of Avengers (AI) founder
Zombie: Back
Zuras: Back as of Neil Gaiman's Eternals series
Final page spotlights death deities and after death

Hammer and Anvil: Still dead
Hangman: still dead, but has a successor

Currently alive again, see Children's Crusade. Whether it "takes" will depend on how the time travel escapade plays out.

It's Graydon Creed, not Grayson.
During the Necrosha storyline, Cypher, Thunderbird, Maggott, Synch, Skin, Fabian Cortez, Destiny (Adler), and Banshee were all resurrected. Cypher definitely stuck, and Thunderbird, and Banshee were definitely said to be dead again, as they and Moira were resurrected temporarily for Chaos War. Destiny believed she would die again, but it was not shown. The rest were left to possibly show up later, as some "may have survived."

Hi Andy.
Love this new thread!
Just a few points that need clarification:
Andy E. Nystrom wrote:
Phoenix: Separated as two characters (Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force) who have both reappeared, though Grey has been stuck in a White Room for a long time
True, so shouldn't Phoenix Force then be listed as Alive, Active somewhere in the universe?
Andy E. Nystrom wrote:
Yellowjacket (Inactive): Since been active again under various guises; currently Wasp
Didn't Hank Pym (again) assume the identity of Giant Man about a year or so ago?
Andy E. Nystrom wrote:
Agatha Harkness: Resurrected during Byrne's West Coast Avengers run
Wasn't this reconned a few years ago to not be totally true? Something about the Scarlet Witch either warping reality so that Agatha was alive for a few months but not that whole period of time or that she was simply a figment of Wanda's psyche that no one saw? But either way, I thought she was now said to have diedlong ago (when they found her remains a few years ago our time, they said she was long dead, their time)? Shouldn't she be listed as dead?

I've made most of the above changes and added a few more points. Unfortunately I no longer recall what I meant about the other Solarr death (that was a carry over from what I wrote over a decade ago) so I took it out. I made the assumption that the X-Men related Chaos War returns to the graves were similar to Swordsman and Yellowjacket, but I haven't read the X-Men issues so can't be sure. If I'm wrong I'll be corrected soon enough and unlike Wikipedia will promptly adjust for accurately and leave
it corrected. As far as I know, Wasp is still the "active" alias of Pym even if he resumed Giant-Man for a bit, so I'll leave that one as that.

Back even before that.

Within the Final Chapter of the SECOND COMING (it's X-FORCE #28,IIRC); Creed, along with Steven Lang, were transformed by Bastion into Sentinels and all three were destroyed by Hope Summers.

Couple things:
First, in the original OHotMU #13, Baron Zemo has been shown not to be the First, so the numeral is wrong.
Odin is alive, and currently in self exile in Asgard.
With Bloodstone, you could mention his daughter taking up his legacy.
Changling was briefly revived as a sentient zombie by Black Talon (ditto Scaleface of the Molocks)
Dracula is currently "alive".
Korvac was recently destroyed again but his return was said to be inevitable.
One of Jackel`s clone is currently active (I think. I`m not reading Spider Island)
A new Liberty Legion was formed.
Liliith was resurrected long before the other vampires were.
It`d be accurated to say that Phoenix has been revealed as two chacters.
Also, it`d be more accurate to say all the Vampires have been presumably revived.
A new group of Ani-Men (in GLA) have been active since the second one was wiped out.
Blue Streak had a successor.
Many deceased and believed deceased character were cloned in the Corpse Corps. (see the Deadpool: Rank and File Handbook)
Sharon Carter was revealed to be not actually dead.
Dr. Dorcas was impersonated by a robot.
The Living Monolith was returned to Earth due to one of Apocalypse`s plots. Alothough he hasn`t been seen since, it should be presumed that he is still alive.
There has been a Porcupine successor.
Professor Power`s young body was not destroyed and has been used from time to time. (X-Factor Annual 9)
Stick has been resurrected at some point, and sent Elektra to help Wolverine stop regressing.
Tarantula has at least two successors.
Two-Gun Kid may not have been taken from an earlier point. His death has been chronicalled in several different ways, the latest being in the early 1940`s (although I take anything revealed in the Marvels Project series with a grain of salt)
Andreas Strucker also called himself Swordsman, although it`s iffy if he could be considered a successor.
Also, the Swordsman and Yellowjacket returned to dead, as revealed in the OHotMU 1 tpb, although, like you said, this may change.

You're right, I am. That's what I get for not checking things out. The Liberteens were only inspired by the Liberty Legion.
And Pym is being called Giant-Man in Avengers Academy, as well as wearing a Giant-Man costume, so I think it's safe to assume that "Wasp" is no longer his current alias.

With anyone else I might agree with you. But Hank's had multiple aliases active before and he marches to the beat of his own drum, so I'll leave that open-ended until it's confirmed somewhere that he's abandoned the Wasp identity.

The first page of Avengers Academy, which lists the cast, has been referring to him as Giant-Man for the past few months, and he's been Giant-Man since issue #7
( ,r:1,s:0

And I'm putting in "Spoilers" JIC.....
Hobgoblin-Revealed to be Roderick Kingsley; (apparently) killed in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #649 by Phil Urich (former Green Goblin), who becomes the newest Hobgobiln.
Jackal-Revealed to be alive (One of his Clones was indeed actually killed by the Queen) in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #673 .
And I'm certain that you already know about FEAR ITSELF #7.1 & #7.2, right....?!? :wt: :jaw:

Okay. That's confirmation that he's returned to being Giant-Man. I still want confirmation that he's dropped the Wasp alias because of the connection with Janet. Hank is eccentric enough to have two active aliases. But I'll grant the Giant-Man part.

Nope. Nowadays I generally wait until sales (e.g. Boxing Day/Week) to pick up my comics unless, as in the case of the Handbooks and Index books (and also Marvel and DC's B&W books) Ifeel like I'm paying a fair price. Accordingly I'm also selective on whcih news articles I read nowadays as well.

Clarified status a bit more for: Toro, Yellowjacket, Hawkeye. Updated status for Ani-Men (Bird-Man), Bucky, Dr. Lemuel Dorcas, Hobgoblin, Vision. Turned Omega the Unknown in most recent Book of the Dead into a cross-reference for Omega in v1 #14. Minor additional editing.

I suspect I will. People can still suggest changes here until that feature's disabled. Otherwise, I'll be looking at comments on my blog for updates and when the new site has the material I'll make updates there assuming proper editing privileges. So by all means, if you know of anything that's no longer accurate, let me know.

Here are some updates to your list: Banshee recently returned as a Horseman of Death in Uncanny Avengers. Same thing for Grim Reaper. Captain Mar-Vell came back to life thanks to Kree experiments with the Phoenix Force in Avengers vs X-men but voluntarily sacrificed himself and is dead again. Zuras came back in the Gaiman Eternals series. Sharon Carter recently died again in Captain America. The Grand director's apparent death battling the Bucky Cap proved false and he is still alive. Glenn Talbot was impersonated by an LMD during the long storyline involving the Red Hulk, Intelligencia, red She-Hulk etc..........

Too hard to edit posts right now but Egghead was revealed to have faked his death in Ant-Man Annual #1.
It occurs to me that Monty Python's parrot sketch is probably very different in the Marvel Universe.
"He's an ex-parrot."
"Yeah, but that's only because Arnim Zola has transferred the parrot's consciousness into a clone body."
