"We're all pawns." Though he doesn't say it to the Prisoner, he says it to Number 9.

Re: TV Series Trivia

My mistake re: #21 but that's the right answer (the game of course was chess). Most of those are Correct but #11 is Incorrect. Curiously, the alternate episode is included on the same disc as Arrival though, so when I tend out the set, I warn people who are watching for the first time to skip that episode until they've seen the aired version, which is on a later disc.

To expand on the others:
8. The conclusion of Once Upon a Time leads directly into the series finale, making it one of the few episodes where there's no debate as to viewing order.
13. Many Happy Returns was one of the episodes added after the series required a minimum number of episodes to air, so McGoohan when listing his preferred viewing order, left that one out. However it is arguably the best of the "filler" episodes.
20. For those who don't get what Loki did with #20, that's an image of the Schizoid Man, also the title of the episode in question.

Tbh, I was guessing that one based on what episodes I recalled had an alternate version. I knew there was an alternate version for the first, so...

Re: TV Series Trivia

I hedged by bets with #11 by stating the A&E DVDs because I wanted to rule out alternate versions in other releases, particularly since other regions sometimes have different bonus features. I just doublechecked my copies (I have a very early set of DVD releases so the series was spread out over five boxes of two discs each). and there is only one alternate version in the A&E set. I'd be interested in knowing how the unaired version differs for Arrival.

Thank you for the info. the remaining two:
11. For the A&E DVDs, an alternate version of which episode is included?
The Chimes of Big Ben. The picture quality isn't that good. I don't know if it wasn't restored that much being a bonus feature or if it was restored to the extent possible in 2000 (or whatever year the restoration took place) for a 1960s show.

12. What is the Prisoner’s birthday? (I don’t need year, but do include month and day)
March 19, as revealed in Arrival, same as Patrick McGoohan. The reason I remember is because it's also my own.

Re: TV Series Trivia

Today’s theme is Canadian shows. Some shows are co-productions with other countries, usually the US. To a degree I’ve used my gut feeling here on whether a show is Canadian or not. I tend to see the Arrowverse shows as American despite being filmed in Canada and having Canadian supporting cast members, but Forever Knight as Canadian despite airing in the US concurrently. The distinction is whether the series was intended at least in part for a Canadian market or not. I know this might be a tougher than usual quiz, but I could hardly ignore my own country. Lots of questions because many shows are unlikely to ever receive their own quiz (though Forever Knight probably will at some point), As answers get revealed, I'll include links to theme songs or complete episodes where possible to get a sense of Canadian culture.

1. What city was Forever Knight set in? (Canadian-US co-production)
2. What was the name of the main character in Lexx? (Canadian-German co-production)
3. Who was the only cast member credited in all episodes of the run of The Littlest Hobo that began in 1979?
4. Who played the King of Kensington and where can you find a statue of him?
5. What was the code name of the three agents’ boss in John Woo’s Once a Thief and who played her?
6. What was the name of Fred Rogers’ Canadian series?
7. What was the occupation of the main character in Due South? (Canadian-US co-production first season only; after that just Canadian)
8. Who was the host of Bizarre? (Canadian-US co-production)
9. Until it closed in the past few years, where could you find Mr. Dressup’s chair?
10. Which titular character admonished kids to look way up?
11. What was the main hockey team on Power Play?
12. What is the Canadian equivalent of the Emmy awards, i.e. TV awards?
13. Who was the host of Definition for most of its run? In the spirit of the game, if you don’t know the answer but want to guess a letter in the host’s name, I’ll give everyone one go at that.
14. What was the diner in The Beachcomers and where can you find the real life location?
15. Who were the best known hosts (two) of Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada?
16. Who provided the gadgets in Nikita (first series)? (Canadian-US co-production, though under La Femme Nikita in the US)
17. One show about mice was called Nic and ___
18. Who hosted Test Pattern?
19. The McKenzie Brothers characters first appeared on this series?
20. Talking to Americans originated on this series (and who was the person talking to Americans?)
21. Which Quebec singer had an English language show in the 1980s?
22. Which popular Muppets related series from the 1980s (all original characters) is considered Canadian?

Toronto. Big fan of that show, and have met both John Kapelos (Schanke) and Nigel Bennett (Lacroix) - lovely guys, both of them.

Andy E. Nystrom wrote:

Debatably it's the Lexx. Heck, it's the title character and unlike other shows named after spaceships (Enterprise, etc.) it's a genuine living and somewhat sentient entity. But you probably mean Stanley Tweedle.

Andy E. Nystrom wrote:

Again arguable who the main character was, but I presume you mean Benton Fraser, who was a Mountie (RCMP). Otherwise the occupation you want is Chicago PD detective.

Walter.

Fraggle Rock. Interestingly, though most of it was filmed in Canada, making it the prime production site, it was officially co-produced by the US and UK too, and while the human from the Canadian version also appeared in the USA, Australia and various other countries (dubbed into the local language where required), in the UK they filmed using local actors (the original actor died between seasons, so we had more than one); in the UK version the Fraggles are living beneath a lighthouse, and the human character is the lighthouse keeper, not an inventor as in other versions.

7. Correct, though Loki points out that there's another main character who could count. I confess I never watched a full episode of the series, but since it's a very well known series I wanted to include something about it.
Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AJyb4lMXkg
12. Incorrect, though a fair answer. I just looked them up and the Genies covered both film and television and ended in 2012. The awards I'm thinking of, like the Emmys, are strictly television are still around.
19. Correct. Another show I need to watch more of, especially since  I have the DVDs
McKenzie skit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04u58ifxmRA
21. Incorrect
22. Connect; see also Loki's answer. This is another one I never watched much of but it's part of the cultural landscape.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_zsz_MlVvI

Re: TV Series Trivia

Loki's answers are all correct. To expand.

1. I'm also a big fan, though I've never met any of the actors. Sometimes the dialogue is cheesy by today's standards, but it was the first North American prime time drama to feature a vampire (the original Dark Shadows was daytime).
Opening theme from first season. You can also find complete episodes on YouTube, but i won't post those as the entire series is available on DVD. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPhIEG3JYtg

2. I would still argue Stanley over the Lexx because there were times when the ship barely if at all appeared IIRC. All episodes out on DVD. Potential for a future quiz, though for some reasoon even though I've seen it all, not as much as stayed with me as I'd like. It was a maddening show in that episodes ranged from brilliant to terrible. It was rarely in between those two extremes. Opening theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo6ebIy4COw

16. This is another case where a future quiz is possible. Walter had his own fan following online while the show aired. Entire run available on DVD. Opening theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDpQ3ez9P-I

La Femme Nikita was stunning in how dark it was. I recall one episode where

Nikita was told to evaluate a new recruit. All the recruits are people who have been abducted and forced into becoming agents, and failing an evaluation means being executed. Nikita is probably the person who hates this situation the most, wanting to find a way to escape, so she's disinclined to send any other recruit to their death. However, though she initially likes the new recruit, she eventually realizes they are a psychopath, and that there's no choice in the matter; Nikita is going to fail her. She doesn't want to let the recruit know this, so when she runs into the recruit just outside of Control's office as Nikita is heading to inform Control of her decision, Nikita puts on a false face and gives the recruit the impression all is well. Then she walks up the short flight of stairs to Control's office, enters, and within seconds delivers her judgement. Control then informs Nikita that the recruit is already dead; he had her killed before Nikita told him her decision, executed the moment Nikita left her. He'd decided to kill the recruit even before assigning Nikita the evaluation task. Control was evaluating Nikita, not Nikita the recruit; if Nikita had chosen to spare the recruit, they'd both have been executed.

Re: TV Series Trivia

I remember that episode of Nikita and agreed that it was a dark show, perhaps even more so than the later 24, by the same creator. You get the sense that Section was actually a good match for Michael because he was charismatic in short term interactions but was prone to head games when it came to deeper connections. Had he met Nikita outside of Section there's a good chance he'd have eventually gotten arrested as a stalker.

Re: TV Series Trivia

Remaining answers:
3. Who was the only cast member credited in all episodes of the run of The Littlest Hobo that began in 1979?
London. While multiple dogs played Hobo, London was the main one. It appears that the first season only has had a region 2 release, apparently without region encoding (North American shows having only a region 2 release happens surprisingly often) but many episodes from later seasons on YouTube. Here is the two parts to The Genesis Tapes, the 5th season two-parter that established what was already implied: that Hobo was a supercanine. I recommend skipping the preview to part 2 at the end of part 1 as it reveals too much.
Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aH1r-ND0crs
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiRxtOv5yW0

4. Who played the King of Kensington and where can you find a statue of him?
Al Waxman, whose statue can be found in Bellevue Square aka Denison Square in Toronto. First season out on DVD.
Opening theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zacsrdPwydw

5. What was the code name of the three agents’ boss in John Woo’s Once a Thief and who played her?
The Director, played by Jennifer Dale. Originally the only DVDs were select episodes previously found on VHS tapes, but the complete series is now out on DVD, at least in region 1. The final episode differs in a key way from the ending on the earlier VHS/DVD release (though the alternate ending appears as a bonus feature on the complete series set) (major spoilers):

In both versions there's an explosion in a warehouse at the end. In Brother Against Brother, the Director looks back and sees the agents escaping unscathed, but in the final episode as aired, sad music with a montage from earlier episodes plays at the end, pretty much confirming that all three agents died in the explosion.

Promo for the complete series DVD release. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlerttVNlnY

6. What was the name of Fred Rogers’ Canadian series?
Misterogers. To my knowledge no DVD release.
Here's a bit from the original series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dm4pA0S4rRs

8. Who was the host of Bizarre? (Canadian-US co-production)
John Byrner. There have been "Best of" DVD releases with 10 episodes per disc; five singles and then a set of ten with the earlier singles and five more discs. So 100 episodes. Since there were 141 episodes total, one wonders how much worst the remaining episodes were to not be in a Best of range that encompasses over 2/3 of the run. Sadly the packaging provides no info on the episodes (seasons, episode numbers, air dates)
Opening theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiTpuCVQ2CU

9. Until it closed in the past few years, where could you find Mr. Dressup’s chair?
CBC Museum (located in CBC Headquarters), Toronto. Select episodes on DVD.
Here's a random episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwH_Myrj2lo

10. Which titular character admonished kids to look way up?
Friendly Giant. There is a DVD set for sale but it appears to be a bootleg.
Opening theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Vm2-JUldNw

11. What was the main hockey team on Power Play?
Hamilton Steelheads. No DVD release but you can find the entire series on YouTube I believe. A great comedy/drama, highly recommended.
First episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RALg2nI6oY

12. What is the Canadian equivalent of the Emmy awards, i.e. TV awards?
The Gemini Awards

13. Who was the host of Definition for most of its run?
Jim Perry. No DVD release. A few episodes on YouTube.
One episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HySD_mGqqgk

14. What was the diner in The Beachcombers and where can you find the real life location?
Molly's Reach, Gibsons, BC. No DVD release, which is a bit surprising since it ran from 1972 to 1990.
Here are two episodes a decade apart.
From season 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py2w9Ywh2U0
From season 14: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMFtPqnctu0

15. Who were the best known hosts (two) of Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada?
Ron MacClean and Don Cherry. Cherry was known for his racist attitudes, though ironically what got him fired was far from the worst thing he said. As with most non-fiction sports shows, no DVD release.
Random Coach's Corner bits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnG3F-c594s
Hockey Night in Canada themes over the years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6WE3z_--HU

17. One show about mice was called Nic and ___
Pic. Some French episodes on DVD but not the English version.
Here's a French bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oEt2TlQTvg

18. Who hosted Test Pattern?
Dan Gallagher. This was a pretty bizarre game show. No DVD release but there are at least two episodes on YouTube.
Here's one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Htdd1q2nvNg

20. Talking to Americans originated on this series (and who was the person talking to Americans?)
This Hour has 22 Minutes, with Rick Mercer doing a bit where he talks to Americans (including ones at university) about Canada to demonstrate their lack of knowledge about the country. After 9-11 he had reservations about doing so and ended the bit. The first two seasons of the show as a whole are on DVD.
Here's one of the bits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZE0TuKTpo4

21. Which Quebec singer had an English language show in the 1970s? And which other Canadian series mentioned in this quiz did they guest star in?
René Simard. Neither season of The René Simard Show on DVD.
Here's one bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddTE7WSCrQk
Simard guest starred on The Beachcombers in 1979, just after his show ended.

Re: TV Series Trivia

This quiz is a bit different because the questions all relate to a one-episode show, one of the most notorious shows to only air once. We are going to venture into the really dark side of the Force, so far in that even Darth Vader fears it. That’s right: The Star Wars Holiday Special! For purposes of this quiz, the Special is even more canon than the movies, so where movies or other sources contradict the Special, go with the Special.

1. What was the name of the holiday being celebrated in the show?
2. The special aired at or around the time of which real life holiday?
3. What was the name of Chewbacca’s father?
4. Who played the friend of Chewbecca’s family (other than Han)?
5. According to the opening credits, who played R2D2?
6. When Chewbacca’s mother watched a cooking show, who played the four-armed female chef?
7. Who played the owner of the Cantina (and sang the Cantina song)?
8. Which character sang the Star Wars theme?
9. Who played the woman in Chewbacca’s father’s virtual reality fantasy?
10. Which major character (i.e. appeared in the movies) first appeared in the Star Wars Holiday Special?
11. Storm Troopers were distracted by a music video featuring which band (as they were known as at the time)?
12. What was the name of Chewbacca’s mother?
13. What was the name of Chewbacca’s son?
14. What year did the special first (and last) air in?
15. Who were the first actual movie characters to show up in the special?
16. Which movie cast member requested a copy of the special in exchange for recording Commentary for the movies?
17. Which actor appeared in both the Star Wars Holiday Special and Legends of the Superheroes? (There is no evidence of them subsequently attempting to murder their agent).
18. Who voiced the character from question 10?

2. Incorrect. It's a very common misconception (I've seen a bootleg calling it the Christmas Special) but the air date actually lines up a lot better with another holiday.
10. Correct. So now you know why Boba Fett always seems to be in a bad mood.
14. Correct.
15. Incorrect for both. But you are right that it's two characters.
16. Incorrect.

"Star Wars, made me a fortune, paid off my mortgage, bought me a car."

I don't recall his mother appearing. His wife, Malla, did, however, in case that's who you mean.

Re: TV Series Trivia

All those are correct.
More comments:
2. Specifically the US version of course being a US show (Canada it's a month earlier). I watched it when it first aired and had just moved to a new place at the time, so I remembered it being in November when I saw it.
12. My mistake. I meant his wife.
15. While much of the show doesn't make a lot of sense, this choice actually works: it's a Chewbacca's family-centred story and Han is Chewie's best friend, so it makes sense that they would appear first.
16. Fisher said she would play it when she was ready for her guests to leave. I wish I had met her because she sounds like she had a great sense of humour.

Re: TV Series Trivia

All those are correct. More notes:

1. I had to word this question carefully because the JLA and JSA both had similar versions of Batman, Robin, and Black Canary, even before factoring more explicitly legacy characters such as Flash and Green Lantern.

2. Captain Marvel was originally from Fawcett. And if you ignore the legacy aspect, a case coluld be made for Flash and Green Lantern originating outside of DC, which is why I added the All-American caveat.

17. I won't say much about the first Flash series because that's a good topic for a later quiz.

21. Robin/Dick Grayson from Batman, Robin from Legends, and guy in the red shirt from Supergirl all appear to be the same character, using "Holy..." catchphrases, etc.

I was in my single digits during the 70's and thus watched most of the various "Super-Friends" cartoons that aired on ABC Saturday mornings on their first run.  I remember seeing an ad on TV for the live-action Legends of the Super-Friends special...but my parents chose not to watch it, and since at the time we had only one TV, I never got to see it.  I've learned more about it second-hand thanks to the internet and seen only a couple of brief clips on YouTube.  I'm sure I'd have loved it if I had seen it when it aired, but what little I've seen was as an adult, and...well, I also got to see the Star Wars Christmas Special when it aired, and what little I've seen in clips of it in subsequent years is enough.

Here's the Honest Trailer for both the Ewoks-centric TV-movies AND the Star Wars Christmas Special:

Those are all correct. If you ever decide to endure the episodes, believe it or not, Legends of the Super-Heroes did get a DVD release complete with deleted scenes and outtakes. The packaging warns that the disc may not play on PCs but I've had no issues. I missed the first part as a kid and only watched the second part, which was unfortunately the Roast. Even as a kid I bailed mid way. Having since seem the whole thing, the second part is still the worst but the whole thing is pretty bad overall, though fascinating in its own way. The nicest thing you can say is that the music is pretty decent and a lot of the costumes are comics-accurate and show that comics accurate costumes can actually work on screen.
