Thor: Official Index to the Marvel Universe tpb

Historical text from Comixfan:

Amazon is listing this for April 11. It says it'll collect up to #12 but with the current index series juggling 4 titles, I doubt it'll conclude any earlier than #14 as per the previous series unless mandated by sales.

The collection will include the Thor section up to #12, because there's not going to be a Thor section after #12. We're stepping up the gear on Thor, giving his section a larger chunk of the book, over the next couple of issues so that the TPB can come out in time for the movie.

That makes sense. I had noticed the extra Thor material of late but had attributed it at the time to the series starting earlier than the others (except Captain America Comics)

So, do we know yet what new material is going to be in this collection? I'm a big X-Men and Spider-Man fan, so picking up the first index series in both individual issues and trades was a no-brainer (I figured I might as well get Iron Man as well to have all three). However, I'm not as much of an Avengers fan, so as much as I'd love to support you guys and get everything, buying the trades of this second round is going to depend somewhat on how much new information is going to be included . . .

Not 100% set as yet, as it depends a lot on how many pages the main series eats up. When we can confirm contents, we will.

Okay, thanks. How far in advance do books like this go to press, do you know?

We submitted the text a few days ago. Marvel will lay out the text and cover images, and then send us a pdf version, which we will proof read, typically over a weekend to a week initially, then we submit corrections, get a new pdf a few days later, and then repeat the cycle, each time with less time to proof but, hopefully, with fewer corrections to make. We usually get three or four rounds of proofing before it goes to print. This will go to print sometime in the next three to four weeks I believe.

Hey, thanks for sharing that process info. How'd all of the proofing go?

I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to get this book. I got the first series in both formats, and I'll probably get the Avengers one because a lot of characters I like have been members (Beast, Quicksilver, Justice, Firestar, Hawkeye, She-Hulk, Black Panther, Spider-Man, etc.), but Thor and Cap I'm uncertain on. Every little bit helps, obviously, but do you have any idea how likely a third index volume is at this point and to what extent its publication will be dependent on sale of the trades? Because I'd love to see a volume three covering adjectiveless X-Men, Spectacular Spider-Man, and maybe Avengers West Coast or Fantastic Four?

What other long-running series are possibilities? Hulk is the only one that really comes to mind, though I'm sure I've forgotten some big ones . . .

Anyway, now that this book has most likely been sent to the printers, can you reveal any new/additional content that has been added for the trade?

We know how likely a third volume is, but I can't say right now. It's always dependent on sales, both monthly and trades. Thor's TPB hasn't gone to the printers yet; we're still proofing. There is additional content, but again, not sure how much I am allowed to reveal on exactly what is in there. Suffice to say that's there's a fair amount of bonus material.

Well, here's me hoping there's a third, fourth, and beyond. There are so many great series that haven't ever gotten the official index treatment, like the Incredible Hulk and Daredevil to name a couple.

Very nice! That section is shaded blue but not titled, which is why I missed them, but definitely a welcome addition! I hadn't realized there was a bit of continuity between one of the Captain America ads and one of the Thor ads. Amusingly, this is probably the first time a story from a Gold Key comic has been indexed officially.

It's interesting to note that not only is the Thor ad a sequel, but that the Cap ad shows that a sequel was always planned; it wasn't an afterthought, as the Cap ad has the villains mentioning they have another option for their invasion, and that bit of dialogue isn't clarified in the ad itself. It's only when you look at both ads you realise that they are linked.

You're right, thanks for pointing that out.

And I just realized that my copy was misprinted. The page that was supposed to part 0f 146, 147, and part of 148 instead has 144 and the Hostess ads blue box from two pages before.

Hmmm...but two people having the same exact problem concerns me. If this is an entire print run of botched copies, wouldn't Marvel have to replace them?

While unfortunate, since the Index series isn't going to be a big money maker, I'd be happy with the missing page being online. I wouldn't want Marvel to lose money on this and then reconsider publishing them.

Stuart V

Getting reports of the same problem with other copies. Not sure if it is the entire run, but it's certainly more than a few, which is really aggravating. The proofs were fine, so the problem seems to have been at the printing stage. Not sure what's going to happen, but we've alerted those above us.

Andy E. Nystrom

Updated my Master List. Unfortunately because I can only list what's actually in the books I did have to leave out Thor 147 and clarify 146 and 148, but if there's a corrected 2nd printing (or if reports come in of error-free first printing copies), I'll update the list accordingly. Between this and the missing headers in the regular index series there's been some real bad luck with the Thor entries!

The glass half full is the Master List does include the Hostess material

There is, plus they're actually easier still to read because of the paper, despite the slightly smaller size. And who wouldn't want to read an index that covers Hostess stories?

Did we ever figure out how widespread this problem was? This is the only index trade I haven't picked up because I didn't preorder it and then heard about this printing problem, so I figured I'd wait and see what happened.

Should I just have my shop order me a copy and then make sure I go there the day they get it so I can check it for the printing problem and have them report it to Diamond as a printing error if it's a misprinted copy?

Roger Ott

The Avengers Index TPB contains the missing pages from the Thor Index TPB, with a note that future printings will correct the error.

I'm guessing that means the entire run was misprinted.

I found a mistake in the listing for Thor #280. Lonni Lattimer appeared next in Squadron Supreme #1.

Hello, I recently bought this and noticed it's missing the pages with issues #101-127, but it doesn't look damaged. Is anyone else's copy like this? And is there anywhere I can read the missing pages?

I know the missing page with #146-148 is in the Avengers index. Are these there too?

It sounds like you have a misprinted copy unfortunately; that or the book is more damaged than it appears. By any chance are any of the pages duplicated? if so, that would definitely point to a misprint. Only the one sheet is in the Avengers because every copy of the Thor index is missing that one page. Unfortunately because you're missing so many pages, any online sources reproducing them would go beyond fair use. My best suggestion is to try to return it and order another copy, I wish I had better news.

Re: Thor: Official Index to the Marvel Universe tpb

Thanks for answering. The only duplicated page is the later one with #144.

I contacted Jeph York and he said this sounds like a one-time printer problem where a 16-page signature fell out before binding.
